2 years ago I was in a series of incidents which left me with 4 stress fractures in my lower back. I am 16 now and after a back brace and hundreds of MRI's and cat scans I am still in pain. I have been told, "well, we'll try this now" so many times and I just want something that is a for sure. This is where medication comes in...and no I'm not asking for 180 80mg oc's a month. I have used oxycodone, oxymorphone, and hydrocodone before and it has made my pain much more tolerable. I feel that because of my age I will not be rx'd even Tylenol 3's. Any advice? Any non-narcotic meds that can help? No I'm not asking how to score a script I'm just curious if it's because I'm too young or they don't believe my pain is legit?

Thanks,
OXMan

kratom, poppy seed/pod tea, and tramadol are all good for easing pain, although only the tea will contain bona fide opiates, the others have opiod effects, one of which is pain relief. In my opinion the tea is the most analgesic, with kratom second, and tramadol third.

I realized that you were wondering about "non-narcotic" meds, but these should all be accessible to you, and although the legality of the tea may be dubious, it shouldn't be hard to find any of these, just google them.

Also, have you tried requesting a script for pain relief meds and been denied, or are you speculating, because it seems somewhat unlikely that they wouldn't at least give you T3's or reassess your situation. Best of luck!

Have they actually refused to prescribe pain meds?
I would speak to another doctor or your primary care doc and see about a referral to a pain management clinic.
No matter the age if you have pain you have pain and it should be treated.

do you have nerve pain? Can you tell us more about your pain specifically... I can then do my best to make medication suggestions or other options. I am pretty familiar with many conditions that cause pain and what medications are usually prescribed, which ones work and I also know what it's like to be a teenager in legitimate pain. I'd love to help

i have chronic back pain as well, its frustrating but sometime theres nothing we can do about it
have you tried physical therapy?

Mr. Tambourine Man, thanks a lot for all your advice. I have heard of Kratom and its opiate like effects it bears. Perhaps next time I run to my local head shop (Puff n' Stuff) I'll see if they have any. As for the poppy pods...well you see I still live with my parents and I don't know how well that would go over. I have grown Papaver oriental before so I'm sure if I came across some Papaver somniferum seeds I could claim it as Oriental Poppies.

I guess I am at fault for not asking for any pain relief meds. I always assumed that if the doctor was going to prescibe narcotics to you than you had better have 2/3 of your body covered in 3rd degree burns. Along with my doubt in being rx'd opiates, there is still the fear of the finger of drug seeking behavior being pointed at me. Next time I go into my back specialist I will have to grow a pair and ask for something to take the edge off. * Also Mr. Tambourine Man your avatar is my background to my cell phone.

Now the fun part, Cane2theLeft the condition I have is called spondylolesis resulting from 2 stress fractures in the lumbar 4 (L4) and 2 more in the lumbar 5 (L5). One of these is still not healed fully. I have never been prescribed any opiates for pain before either. This incident occured in August of 2006. I am 16 years old now...soon to be 17.

It was also recommended to me to try a new back brace but I am just going to say no to that because I have already worn a back brace once for almost 1.5 years and I sure as hell am not oging back into one. I have never been to physical therapy, though at my last visit on friday of last week it was mentioned.

Thanks Everyone,
OXMan

What is the pain like? Can you describe the severity... what is feels like and the impact it has on your life?

You may need narcotics pain medications or you may just need the right combination of nonnarcotics... some of the latter than can be very useful for pain including muscle relaxants and/or benzodiazepines, NSAIDs, steroid packs, anticonvulsants and others. If its mostly nerve pain you should first try tricyclics or anticonvulsants. If its muscle related you should try strong NSAIDs or a steroid pack and be given muscle relaxers then or if the NSAIDs are not effective alone.

Where is the pain? is it just in your lower back? does it go down your leg? What physical limitations has it caused you and how have you had to alter your life or lifestyle because of it?

sorry for all the questions- there are too many variables to be able to give any advice worth listening to without knowing them. There are no 'one-size-fits-all' answers to pain issues... everyone experience and deals with pain differently and everyone's body is different. When I had doctors that understood this, my pain was treated effectively. When my doctors only saw protocol and ignored what I had to say, the treatment was sloppy and ineffective. I just want to help you get the RIGHT treatment... not just tell you what worked for me or someone else.

Yes, I agree with you completely.

I'd say pain scale 4 maybe 5 I mean don't get me wrong I'll bend over to grab something and when I straighten up it's a sharp pain in my lower back. It does not radiate down my leg either. It takes me a good hour or 2 to "loosen up" in the morning. It has impacted my life because now I can't play lacrosse anymore which was a big deal to me until this happened. I had quite a few colleges looking at me too. But all those aspirations have gone out the window. I also cannot run anymore. It bothers me that I can't even sit down with out it hurting...

That sounds really unpleasant, especially if you enjoyed playing lacrosse & were active prior to this, sorry to hear that. I haven't had any long-term injuries like that so I'm just going off of my experience.

Just wanted to add a word about buying kratom: do yourself a favor and don't buy a little tin of extract for some outrageous price at your local head shop, but use google, and find a reputable vendor. The quality will be better and the price muich less ridiculous (albeit still high IMO). In my experience Malaysian or "Super Indo" are the better varieties, at anywhere from 6-12 grams should definitely give some mild relief from back pain, or at least the related stress :).

And again, if your pain escalates substantially, I would consider poppy seed tea, which you can get more info about on this site than you will ever need (be warned though, it must be pursued with caution)

And as one final suggestion, have you considered cannabis (or alternately, getting a "green card")? I don't know where you are so this may not be viable, but does weed help your pain at all? (oral works better than smoked for pain relief I find)

It sounds like you've had a very serious injury which still causes pain. That seems like a pretty good reason to be prescribed pain pills to me. I think you've gotten the idea somewhere that a prescription to opiates is a bigger deal than it really is (in the states anyways). Where are you from?

I've never had anything like this happen to me, but I do believe that people can completely heal themselves. All of the cells in your body periodically regenerate, lasting injury is a state of mind.

Slow, restorative yoga would probably work wonders for you, especially if you could zone out on some oxycontin at the same time.

good luck :)

Can I ask for different Pain Meds now?

I know it's pretty taboo to just "ask" your doctor for something stronger but they seriously already have me on a pretty hefty routine of pain meds that it seems like it wouldn't shock him too much to ask if I could just be changed to something where i'm taking less pills or less apap atleast or none all together. Currently for 1 month I get 120 Percocet 10mg OxyCodone/325mg APAP pills for breakthrough pain and 120 Morphine 15mg ER's for pain to be taken 2 in the morning and 2 at night. I take so many pills it's frickin ridiculous. I wish i could take just 1 OxyContin for pain when I needed it instead of 4 perc's at once & I could take one 60mg Morphine ER instead of 4 15mg's. Does he write my scripts like this to cover his ass or what? I mean it would be the SAME thing but he seems to just keep writing my percs like candy.

I mean he knew I still had 40 Percocet 10's from the hospital and still gave me another 120 equaling out to 160 Percocet 10's in 2 days... ... ... all for 10 bux. I quit doing heroin awhile back and I swear being in chronic pain's turned me into an opiate addict again quick. I've even wondered if I can bang my morphines since i have micron filters but I haven't gotten that bored yet. Can anyone with experience with pain management and the doctor tell me if they think it's out of the question for me to say im concerned about all the APAP im taking and all the pills & ask for something with OxyCodone alone since essentially thats what i'm taking all the Percs for! Everyone tells me to be happy I even get the meds that I do but they don't seem to understand it's not quite as fun when you actually need them!

I am in chronic pain too, and i was taking a bunch of pills like you. You can ask him to go ahead and switch your meds up some, thats what i did and i got put on OxyContin and Roxicodone for BT pain. It would be perfectly fair for you to 'pop the question'.

Just explain that its a lot of pills, and say you would just like something you could take twice a day and your normal BT meds. Worked perfectly for me

I'm not sure, maybe pills with APAP are alot 'safer' from the doctors point of view to prescribe rather than the notorious oxycontin pill. Just be honest and tell him what u've told us, it doesnt seem out of the question.

Thank you guys because honestly I am in chronic pain and it sucks. Im not looking to sell my pills or even abuse them. If i wanted to do that I would of been shotting up my morphine pills by now but im really trying to leave that part of my life behind me. Im just really tired of taking SOOOOO many pills when in reality they could break down my pills into just 1 or 2 pills twice a day. Im glad other people also don't think it's out of the question for me to pop that question. I mean if im already taking OxyCodone anyways I really don't see what thr problem is. I mean I'd be happy with Roxicodone 30's. My doc also trusts me he knows I don't abuse my med's. Most months I don't even run out because If i CAN get through a day without them I really try to. I know Im getting addicted to opiates all over again and this time I really don't ahve a choice so Im doing anything I can to minimize the damage. Xyther4523 what exactly did you tell your doc? You were just tired of taking so many pills and wanted to just take less? It's just less for me to worry about and less for me to carry around you know? I carry so many pills I feel like an aids patient and everybody thinks because I have "so many" I can just spare a few here or there for them to have "fun" with not realizing i NEED these pills.

i've been on pain meds for a year, and i never got more then 120 perc 5mgs a month

then got switched to the fent patch 2.5mg and get 100 5mg oxyirs every 6 weeks or so

I went in there and said im tired of taking so many pills, and that the percocet wouldnt last the full 4 hours, i would get about 2 then it was a sharp decline in its effectiveness. I also said i had stuff to do and it was really hard to do when the percocet was wearing off cause i would sleepy and i couldnt think. So thats when he decided to put me on Oxycontin 30mg and Roxicodone 15mg for BT so i wouldnt get tired and have only 2 hours of relief

Well then I'm going to talk to him on monday when i go in to talk to him about some blood test results. I can't be taking so many pills all the time it drives me nuts. I mean the morphine was something he recently added adn I'm not even sure if I like it yet or not.

Pillpopper, during that year did you ever try and get something else from him for your pain? Was he just dead set on only giving you Perc 5's & nothing else? If you don't mind me asking what is wrong with you that your on chronic pain meds? This is all from my regular dr. i don't go to a pian management doc or anything. I mean i get 120+ 10mg Percs and the Morphine ER's & it's enough to "curb" my pain if I pop all the pills im supposed to. Its just ALOT of pills to take all of the time!

Thank you to everyone who ahs responded to this thread. I greatly appreciate it. I really just want to take less pills, I don't want something more "abusable" im just tired of having to take so many pills so often. I don't think it's to much to ask for me to ask for less pills with the same amount of "drugs" so to say.
